UN meeting on Myanmar spotlights Security Council divisions

UNITED NATIONS:  The UN Security Council’s first open meeting on Myanmar in eight years highlighted the body’s deep divisions: China and Russia supported the Southeast Asian country’s government while the US, Britain and France demanded an end to “ethnic cleansing” of its Rohingya Muslim minority. With the number of Rohingyas fleeing to Bangladesh since August 25 now topping 500,000, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the UN’s most powerful body on Thursday to take strong action. He also called on Myanmar’s authorities to immediately halt military operations, allow “unfettered access” for humanitarian aid, and ensure that all those who fled can return home. US Ambassador Nikki Haley, using Myanmar’s former name of Burma, told council members: “We cannot be afraid to call the actions of the Burmese authorities what they appear to be: a brutal, sustained campaign to cleanse the country of an ethnic minority.” “The time for well-meaning, diplomatic words in this cou

Russia threatens to block Facebook over data storage

MOSCOW:   In its latest attempt to wrest control of the Internet, Russia’s communications agency on Tuesday threatened to block access to Facebook if the company refuses to store its data locally. Alexander Zharov, chief of the Federal Communications Agency, told Russian news agencies on Tuesday that they will work to “make Facebook comply with the law” on personal data, which obliges foreign companies to store it in Russia. Critics have slammed the law, which went into effect in 2015, for potentially exposing the data to Russian intelligence agencies. Zharov said that the Russian government understands Facebook is a “unique service” but said it will not make exceptions and will have to block it next year if Facebook does not comply. Last year, Russia blocked business-focused social network LinkedIn after a court ruled it violated the law on data storage. LinkedIn is available in Russia only if accessed via proxy servers. Market for illegal elephant ivory surges in Laos, study says

The illegal sale of African ivory in Laos is surging even as neighboring China phases out its own legal ivory market, highlighting the challenge of curbing wildlife trafficking across porous borders, a conservation group said Thursday. The number of Chinese-owned retail outlets selling elephant ivory in the Southeast Asian country increased significantly between 2013 and 2016, and the majority of buyers in Laos were visitors from China, according to a report by Save the Elephants, a Kenya-based conservation group. The group’s researchers said some ivory goods were crafted in Vietnam while ivory has also illegally reached Laos from Thailand, where traders face a crackdown by authorities.China, the world’s largest ivory consumer, has said it plans to shut down its legal ivory trade by the end of this year in an effort to slow the slaughter of African elephants. While conservationists praise the move as a significant step in efforts to stop poaching, there are concerns about whether

Ronaldo double hands Real first win in Dortmund

DORTMUND:  Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his 150th European appearance to give  Real  Madrid  a 3-1 victory at Borussia Dortmund, their first against them in Germany, and make it two wins out of two matches in their Champions League Group H. Ronaldo, who has now scored 411 goals in his 400  Real  appearances, grabbed their second of the evening after a fine effort from Welshman Gareth Bale, who had put them ahead with a superb volley in the 18th minute. The Spaniards punished the hosts for playing too high and found the gaps they needed to score. The Portuguese killed off the match, thumping the ball past keeper Roman Buerki in the 79th. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang briefly pulled one back in the 54th but the Germans could not replicate last season’s two-goal comeback to draw. Real , whose lacklustre start in La Liga has left them in sixth place seven points off leaders Barcelona, have six points, level with Tottenham Hotspur who beat APOEL Nicosia 3-0. Bundesliga lea

Interpol approves membership for State of Palestine over Israeli objections

JERUSALEM:  Interpol voted on Wednesday to admit the State of Palestine as a member over Israeli objections at the international police organisation’s general assembly in Beijing. Dealt a diplomatic blow, Israel said Interpol, which is dedicated to fostering cross-border cooperation against crime and terrorism, had made the world a more dangerous place by letting the Palestinians in. Israel had argued that Palestine is not a state and that it is ineligible to join. Under interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals, a Palestinian Authority was granted limited self-rule in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Shortly before the vote in the Chinese capital, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said Israel’s efforts to delay the ballot until next year had failed. “This victory was made possible because of the principled position of the majority of Interpol members,” Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said in a statement. Interpol said membership applications by the State of

UML leader Nepal stresses leftist alliance in upcoming elections

CHITWAN:  CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has stressed the need of an alliance among the leftists in the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives and State Assemblies. Speaking at a press meet organised by Press Chautari Nepal, Chitwan Chapter today, he said there was no possibility of a single party garnering majority in the elections so as to run the government that is why an electoral alliance among the leftist parties was necessary. The former Prime Minister Nepal said the UML was ready for the leftists’ alliance if the CPN Maoist Center (CPN MC) was positive. He asserted the party ‘policy’ of taking part in the election alone if there was an electoral alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN MC. Giving his reaction about the party’s position in the recently held third phase of local level election in Province 2, he argued the part

New rules in cricket: Players can be sent off

DUBAI:  The International Cricket Council has introduced new rules and rule changes for the centuries-old game that will come into effect on Thursday. One of them is to give umpires the power to send a player off for the rest of the match for serious misconduct. Players can be sent off for level four offenses, the most serious under the ICC’s code of conduct. Those offenses include assaulting or threatening to assault another player, an umpire, the match referee or a spectator, or any act of violence on the field of play. Any act that is “contrary to the spirit of the game” or “brings the game into disrepute” can also be labelled a level four offense. Previously, all misconduct was dealt with by umpires and the match referee after the game with fines and bans. Less serious offenses will still be dealt with in this way. The new rules also say a bowler who bowls a deliberate front-foot no ball is guilty of “unfair play” and isn’t allowed to bowl again for the rest of the in

India’s bullet train project re-ignites debate on land for ‘public purpose’

MUMBAI:  Plans for India’s first bullet train, a $17-billion-dollar project, have sparked a debate on the definition of “public purpose” for land acquisitions which have become increasingly contentious. The 500-km- (310-mile-) long high-speed rail link promises to cut travel time between the financial hub of Mumbai and the industrial city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat state by more than half to under three hours. The project, inaugurated earlier this month, will need about 825 hectares (2,000 acres) of land. The government has said it will complete the line by 2022, even as farmers along the proposed route held protests against giving up their land. They may have little say in the matter, as the state has a legal right to take private property for public purposes. But analysts say the definition of what constitutes public purpose needs revisiting, even for infrastructure projects. “When projects – airports, private colleges, bullet trains – benefit only a small percentage of the

Pakistan’s ex-PM Sharif vows to fight corruption charges

ISLAMABAD:  Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed to fight graft accusations after he appeared before an anti-corruption court on Tuesday, kicking off a trial threatening his party’s chances at the next general election due in mid-2018. Returning to Pakistan following a month abroad, Sharif lashed out against the judiciary after briefly appearing before a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court in Islamabad on three charges. He did not enter a plea. “I am fighting baseless cases based on lies and also getting punished,” he told reporters. TV channels reported that Sharif was scheduled to be formally charged on Oct. 2, about two months after his disqualification by the Supreme Court for not declaring a small source of income that he denied receiving. A Supreme Court-appointed panel has also alleged Sharif family’s wealth far exceeds its legal income. Sharif, who returned from London on Monday, has portrayed his disqualification as efforts to subvert the

Chelsea won’t rush Hazard back, says Conte

LONDON:  Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has the club’s long-term interests in mind with his cautious approach towards selecting Eden Hazard as they prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid. After making his first start of the season in the League Cup last week, the Belgium international was again named as a substitute for Chelsea’s 4-0 Premier League win over Stoke City on Saturday as he continues to recover from a fractured ankle. “I think now Eden is improving a lot and for sure he’s in contention for Atletico Madrid,” Conte told reporters. “After a bad injury and surgery you need time. He’s almost ready to play but if I make this decision it will be because I’m comfortable with it,” the Italian added. “I think we are managing him very well. Other players are also very important for us and now it’s important to be sure he’s ready.” Conte praised new signing Alvaro Morata for adapting well to the physical demands of the Premier League afte

Myanmar says bodies of 28 Hindu villagers found in Rakhine State

YANGON:  Myanmar government forces found on Sunday the bodies of 28 Hindu villagers who authorities suspected were killed by Muslim insurgents last month, at the beginning of a spasm of violence that has sent 430,000 Muslim Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh. The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgent group denied killing the Hindus saying it did not attack civilians. The latest violence in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State began on August 25 when ARSA militants attacked about 30 police posts and an army camp, killing about 12 people. The United Nations has described as ethnic cleansing a sweeping government offensive in the north of Rakhine State in response to those attacks. The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar has said more than 400 people have been killed, most of them insurgents. It rejects accusations of ethnic cleansing, saying it is fighting terrorists. Members of the small Hindu minority appear to have been caught in the middle. Some have fled to Banglade

Bali’s rumbling volcano spurs travel warnings from Australia, Singapore

KARANGASEM/INDONESIA:  Fears that a volcano could erupt imminently on the holiday island of Bali prompted several countries to issue travel warnings, while Indonesian authorities raced to evacuate tens of thousands of people living in the “danger zone”. Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and the UK issued advisories on Monday and at the weekend warning that increased volcanic activity at Mount Agung in eastern Bali could disrupt flights at one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. “Given the possible eruption of Mount Agung, Singaporeans should defer non-essential travel to the affected areas at this juncture,” the foreign ministry said in an online statement. Bali’s international airport was operating normally on Monday, as were tourist spots across the island. Indonesian authorities have imposed a 12-km (7.5 miles)exclusion zone around the crater. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said on Monday that around 62,000 people li
