Pujara, rain thwart rampaging Sri Lanka in Kolkata

KOLKATA:  India’s top order bulwark Cheteshwar Pujara resisted Sri Lanka’s charge with a gutsy unbeaten 47 before rain returned to wipe out more than two sessions of the second day’s play in the opening test on Friday. Steady showers had allowed just 11.5 overs on the first day of the three-match series and the heavens opened once more on Friday to initially force an early lunch and then wash out the final two sessions with India reeling on 74 for five. When play was called off, Pujara, a model of concentration, stood three runs short of a 16th test fifty, a knock he would be proud of considering the conditions at Eden Gardens. Local favourite Wriddhiman Saha survived some anxious moments to remain six not out at the other end as the visitors continued to plunder wickets between the showers in search of a first test win against their hosts in India. Sri Lanka’s first change bowler Dasun Shanaka dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin, both for four, to compound

ACC U-19: Nepal clinch historic 19-run victory over India ACC U-19 ASIA CUP TOURNAMENT

KATHMANDU:  Nepal put on a scintillating display of both batting and bowling to stun the tournament favorites India with 19-run victory during the ACC U-19 Asia Cup held at the Bayuemas Oval in Pandamaran, Klang, Malaysia on Sunday. With today’s victory, defeating test playing nation India in any category, Nepal kept its hope alive of advancing into the semi-final of the tournament. Nepal, coached by former bowler and captain Binod Das, successfully defended their 188 runs, by bowling out India, coached by former captain Rahul Dravid, for 166 runs in 49 overs of their allotted 50 overs, to emerge with 19 runs victory, in the crucial encounter. Nepali skipper Dipendra Singh Airee played a captains knocks of 88 runs in just over 100 deliveries with six hit to the fence and a towering six over a cow corner before returning with the ball to torment Indian’s innings with four scalps. Man-of-the-match, Airee’s defiance with the bat and ball, single-handedly propelled Nepal

Griezmann and Giroud score again as France beat Wales 2-0

PARIS:  Strike partners Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud scored as France began its World Cup warmup program with a comfortable 2-0 home win against Wales in a friendly on Friday. Both have struggled for their clubs, with Griezmann lacking goals for Atletico Madrid and Giroud hardly managing to get a game for Arsenal. But in the continued absence of Karim Benzema for France they still work very well in tandem for Les Bleus. They have been coach Didier Deschamps’ front two since last year’s European Championship and are odds-on to continue at the World Cup in Russia next year. France qualified top of its qualifying group while Wales failed to make the playoffs. France is away to Germany on Tuesday. Griezmann showed balance and athleticism to volley in the opening goal in the 18th minute — his 19th for France — and Giroud’s composure under pressure allowed him to pick his spot in the 71st for his 29th international goal. “We did what we had to do,” Deschamps sai

Milan draw another blank in Europa League, Everton go out

ZURICH:  Troubled AC Milan were held to a goalless draw by AEK Athens for the second time in a fortnight in the Europa League on Thursday and Everton were dumped out by Olympique Lyonnais after a 3-0 defeat in France. Arsenal qualified despite dropping their first points in Group H as they were held 0-0 at home by Red Star Belgrade while Lazio, Dynamo Kiev and FCSB, formerly Steaua Bucharest, joined them in the round of 32. There was an extraordinary start at Vitoria Guimaraes where visitors Olympique Marseille had substitute Patrice Evra sent off before kick-off after players became involved in a brawl with fans of their own team. An Olympique player identified by the media as Evra was seen aiming a karate-style kick at supporters who had invaded the area behind the goal. Vitoria completed Olympique’s misery by winning 1-0 with a late goal and the French side had Boubacar Kamara sent off for a second yellow card offence. Olympique Lyon scored three times in the last

De Bruyne full of pep from Guardiola tactics at City

LONDON:  Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is enjoying playing under manager Pep Guardiola and credits the Spaniard’s tactics for helping him thrive at the Premier League leaders. The Belgian international notched seven league goals and nine assists in 2015 but since Guardiola’s arrival last July, De Bruyne’s impact has risen drastically, with the 26-year-old assisting 21 goals in 36 league games last season. De Bruyne has provided nine assists and scored twice in 16 appearances across all competitions this campaign and the attacking midfielder praised his manager and the club’s successful transfers for improving the unbeaten side. “Since Pep came to the club, he plays a style of football I like to play, so it makes it easy as a player,” De Bruyne told Sky Sports. “I like it here, it is the perfect environment and since I came here there has been a lot of trust in me. I like the project they are doing from the moment I came here. “There was an older team (when

Cavani double spurs PSG to 3-0 win over Nice

PARIS:  Paris St Germain went a provisional seven points clear at the top of Ligue 1 after Edinson Cavani’s first-half double and a Dante own goal after the break secured a 3-0 home win over Nice in an entertaining clash on Friday. The result left  PSG  in the driving seat with 29 points from 11 games, though second-placed champions AS Monaco can reduce the gap when they visit Girondins Bordeaux on Saturday.Nice, who finished third last season, stayed 14th with 10 points after their fourth successive league defeat. PSG  were unfazed by the absence of their suspended Brazil forward Neymar, who was sent off in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Olympique Marseille, as Angel Di Maria made the most of a rare start in the wake of strong competition up front. The Argentine winger set up both of Cavani’s goals, having whipped in a third-minute free kick from the left which the Uruguay hitman superbly headed home at the near post. The pair combined again in the 31st as Di Maria carved open the v

Liverpool’s trio of young strikers seek elusive breakthrough

LONDON:  Around the time 17-year-old England striker Rhian Brewster became the first player since Pele to score a hat-trick in a semi-final at any World Cup on Wednesday, another gifted Liverpool attacker signed a new five-year contract. At 18, Wales international Ben Woodburn is six months Brewster’s senior but two years younger than Dominic Solanke, the third of Liverpool’s trio of young forwards who have all made an impact on the international stage as they await their chance under manager Juergen Klopp.Earlier this season, Woodburn even scored a goal in a senior World Cup match, netting on his debut in the 1-0 victory over Austria in a vital qualifier, while Solanke won the Golden Boy award as the best player at the Under-20 World Cup, which England won. Meanwhile, Brewster awaits what could be his crowning moment in Saturday’s final against Spain. “Brewster will walk back into Liverpool’s Melwood training ground feeling a million dollars,” said Jamie Redknapp, a former L

Bayern need penalties to beat 10-man Leipzig in German Cup

BERLIN:  Bayern Munich edged past 10-man RB Leipzig 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday to advance to the German Cup round of 16 after drawing 1-1 over 120 minutes. Timo Werner’s penalty was saved by Sven Ulreich after all nine previous efforts had succeeded as Bayern continued their successful run under coach Jupp Heynckes ahead of the two sides’ Bundesliga meeting on Saturday.Leipzig, who had Naby Keita sent off in the 54th minute for a second booking, should have scored during a strong first-half performance. Emil Forsberg wove his way into the Bayern box but keeper Sven Ulreich did well to save in the 24th minute, and another similar run should have earned him a penalty when Arturo Vidal clipped the Swede’s legs. But they got their spot-kick in the 68th minute when Yussuf Poulsen was brought down by Jerome Boateng. Forsberg converted it to put Leipzig ahead but Boateng took his revenge five minutes later, chipping over a beautiful cross for Thiago Alcantara, who headed in the

Ronaldo retains FIFA award for world’s best player

LONDON:  Real Madrid’s Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned the best soccer player in the world for the second year running at FIFA’s The Best awards gala on Monday. The four-time Ballon d’Or winner won a La Liga and Champions League double with the Madrid club this year, striking twice against Juventus in the European Cup final to help Real become the first team to retain the trophy in its current format. Barcelona’s Argentina forward Lionel Messi, who has won the Ballon d’or five times, and Paris St Germain’s Brazil forward Neymar were runners up for the award voted for by national team coaches and captains plus the media and fans. The Best FIFA Men’s Player award and the Ballon d’or, which is voted for only by the media, are now separate awards. Real Madrid’s French coach Zinedine Zidane won the manager of the year trophy for his part in the club’s success. Five Real players were named in the best XI of the year, with Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric an

No thoughts of signing Kane, says Madrid president Perez

BARCELONA:  Real Madrid have not thought about signing Harry Kane, club president Florentino Perez said on Tuesday, putting a dampener on widespread speculation that the in-form Spurs striker may be bound for the Santiago Bernabeu. Perez said that, if he did make an inquiry, Tottenham would value Kane at 250 million euros ($295 million), which would be a world-record transfer fee. “(But) I haven’t thought about signing Kane. We are happy with (Karim) Benzema and the rest of the team,” Perez told radio station Cadena COPE on Tuesday. Parts of Real’s forward line have been misfiring this season, while 24-year-old Kane’s red-hot start to the 2017/18 campaign has seen him score 17 times in 16 games for club and country. That has put him in the frame to be the next Spurs star to join the Champions League holders, with Croatia’s Luka Modric and Welshman Gareth Bale having made the switch from North London to Madrid in recent seasons. Speculation was fuelled further last wee

Madrid’s young guns shine as Benzema and Ronaldo struggle

MADRID:  Real Madrid’s high-profile ‘BBC’ forward line has come in for criticism this season and while some of their team mates have defended the old guard, the club’s new generation are doing the heavy lifting for Zinedine Zidane’s team. That was again the case on Sunday as Madrid beat Eibar 3-0, with Karim Benzema dropped to the bench for 21-year-old Marco Asensio, who forced an own goal and scored Real’s second, while in-form playmaker Isco, 25, dominated in midfield. Gareth Bale is still out injured and Real’s all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to get involved in the game up front but, thanks to the contributions of Asensio and fellow Spain international Isco, it did not matter. Benzema bore the brunt of the criticism after being panned for his display against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League on Tuesday, but the France forward at least set up Madrid’s third goal, finished by Marcelo. “If I talk about my team mates, I will defend them to the dea

Khedira scores hat-trick as 10-man Juve hit six

MILAN:  Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira grabbed a hat-trick as the Serie A champions came from behind to thump Udinese 6-2 away on Sunday despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men. Big-spending AC Milan were also a man down before the half hour at home to lowly Genoa after their captain Leonardo Bonucci was sent off for elbowing — but their game ended in a 0-0 draw. Lazio kept pace with third-placed Juve on 22 points from nine games after Ciro Immobile scored twice in a 3-0 win over Cagliari to take his tally to 13 league goals this season. Napoli lead the standings with 25 points after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to second-placed Inter Milan, who have 23. Hapless Benevento became the first side in Serie A history to lose their first nine games of the season as they were sunk 3-0 at home by Fiorentina, while fifth-placed AS Roma recorded their 11th successive away league win, 1-0 at Torino. Juve, who had taken one point from their previous two games, went beh

Bayern stretch winning run under Heynckes to join Dortmund on top

BERLIN:  Champions  Bayern  Munich continued their winning run under new coach Jupp Heynckes with a 1-0 victory at Hamburg SV on Saturday to join leaders Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga. Corentin Tolisso fired in the winner in the 52nd minute after some sloppy defending from 10-man Hamburg to lift them to 20 points, level with Dortmund who let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern , who twice hit the post, found it hard going against a spirited Hamburg side but once Gideon Jung was sent off with a straight red card in the 38th minute, the visitors gradually found more space. Tolisso snatched the winner seven minutes after the restart as Heynckes, who took charge earlier this month after Carlo Ancelotti was sacked, made it three wins in three games in all competitions since taking over. “You could see Hamburg were very motivated and were fighting hard,” Heynckes told reporters. “We struggled from the start and we did not keep the

Arsenal thrash 10-man Everton to pile pressure on Koeman

LIVERPOOL:  Everton dropped into the bottom three of the Premier League after Arsenal came from a goal down to earn an emphatic 5-2 victory at Goodison Park on Sunday. It all started so well for the hosts as Wayne Rooney curled a stunning 12th-minute opener into the net to give his side the lead — the strike coming almost 15 years to the day since a 16-year-old Rooney announced himself to the world with a remarkably similar goal against the same opposition. Despite trailing, Arsenal dominated from then on, mustering 17 shots on goal in the first half alone, one of which was Nacho Monreal’s equaliser from close range five minutes before the break. Arsenal continued on the front foot after the interval and took the lead in the 53rd minute via the head of Mesut Ozil. Idrissa Gueye was dismissed 15 minutes later after collecting a second yellow card, before a goal from Alexandre Lacazette in the 74th minute and late strikes from Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez, coming eithe

Klopp unsure if Liverpool’s Mane will return for Senegal WC qualifiers

LONDON:  Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp is baffled by Senegal manager Aliou Cisse’s claim that forward Sadio Mane will be fully fit for their World Cup qualifiers next month, even though Liverpool have ruled him out for up to six weeks. The 25-year-old is still training indoors after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty earlier this month but he was named in Cisse’s squad for their matches against South Africa in mid-November. “I don’t know how he (Cisse) can know. I don’t know, so that’s how it is,” Klopp told a news conference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday. ”Sadio is still in rehab, still indoors, so that is the situation at the moment. If he is fit earlier, I would be really happy, but nobody knows at this moment, so nothing else to say. “They have very important games, I think they need one point, so let’s hope they qualify. I can imagine they are feeling the pressure a little bit but we cannot change t
