Argentina to attack from the start in crunch qualifier

BUENOS AIRES:  Argentina will start Thursday’s crunch World Cup qualifier against Peru with a mind on all out attack in the hope of gaining the three points that would ease the pressure on them for a place in Russia next year, coach Jorge Sampaoli has said. “Tomorrow we are going out there and giving it everything,” Sampaoli told reporters. “My style is to attack the whole time and play the game in the opponent’s half of the field.”Argentina are fifth in the South American qualifying group on 24 points, the same as fourth-placed Peru, who hold the advantage on goal difference. The top four teams qualify automatically for Russia, with the fifth-placed side facing Oceania champions New Zealand in a two-legged playoff in November for another place. Sampaoli, however, told his players a win on Thursday was imperative because they “are playing for a place in the World Cup finals”. Argentina are expected to give striker Dario Benedetto a first start, with Lionel Messi, Angel Di M

England set to lose Ashes, with or without Stokes says Blewett

ADELAIDE:  An Ashes series shorn of Ben Stokes would be a great shame for cricket but England are heading for defeat with or without the troubled all-rounder, former Australia batsman Greg Blewett has said. Test vice-captain Stokes and opener Alex Hales have been suspended from international cricket indefinitely, pending an investigation into an altercation outside a nightclub in Bristol last week. Stokes was initially named in the 16-man squad for the Ashes tour starting in November but the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) rowed back on the decision a day later Blewett, who struck a century on his test debut during the 1994-95 Ashes series, cast doubt on Stokes’s chances of playing a full part in the series. “I’m sure they will (sanction him). They are having their internal investigation. That will play out,” Blewett, a 46-test righthanded batsman, told Reuters in an interview in Adelaide on Tuesday. “It would be a shame if he’s not out here. I think everyone wa

Bayern misery continues as Hertha fight back to draw

BERLIN:  Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich wasted a two-goal lead for the second straight week to draw 2-2 at Hertha Berlin on Sunday in interim coach Willy Sagnol’s debut following the midweek sacking of Carlo Ancelotti. Goals from Mats Hummels in the 12th minute and Robert Lewandowski after the break looked set to get Bayern back on track after last week’s 2-2 home draw with VfL Wolfsburg and Champions League rout in Paris on Wednesday. Yet Hertha needed just five minutes in the second half to level through goals by Ondrej Duda, after a sensational solo run past four players from Genki Haraguchi, and Salomon Kalou. The result left Bayern, who fired Italian Ancelotti a day after their 3-0 Champions League group stage loss at Paris St Germain, in second place on 14 points, five off leaders Borussia Dortmund who beat Augsburg 2-1 on Saturday. Hoffenheim are behind Bayern on goal difference after losing 3-2 at Freiburg on Sunday to end their unbeaten run this season. R

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has been involved in a road accident in the Netherlands and will be assessed by club doctors when he returns on Friday, the Premier League side has said. “Sergio Aguero will be assessed by Club doctors today after being involved in a road accident on Thursday,” City said of the Argentina striker in a statement on their website. (www.mancity.com) “The City forward was in Holland on his day off and has sustained injuries. He will return to Manchester this morning and his status will be checked ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Chelsea.” Earlier reports in the Argentine media said Aguero, who has scored six goals in six league appearances this season, travelled to Amsterdam to attend a concert and was the passenger in a taxi that crashed into a pole. Aguero’s first club, Independiente, said on Twitter: “Strength and fast recovery. All Independiente is with you at this difficult time.” Premier League leaders City, who face Chelsea

Ronaldo double hands Real first win in Dortmund

DORTMUND:  Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his 150th European appearance to give  Real  Madrid  a 3-1 victory at Borussia Dortmund, their first against them in Germany, and make it two wins out of two matches in their Champions League Group H. Ronaldo, who has now scored 411 goals in his 400  Real  appearances, grabbed their second of the evening after a fine effort from Welshman Gareth Bale, who had put them ahead with a superb volley in the 18th minute. The Spaniards punished the hosts for playing too high and found the gaps they needed to score. The Portuguese killed off the match, thumping the ball past keeper Roman Buerki in the 79th. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang briefly pulled one back in the 54th but the Germans could not replicate last season’s two-goal comeback to draw. Real , whose lacklustre start in La Liga has left them in sixth place seven points off leaders Barcelona, have six points, level with Tottenham Hotspur who beat APOEL Nicosia 3-0. Bundesliga lea

New rules in cricket: Players can be sent off

DUBAI:  The International Cricket Council has introduced new rules and rule changes for the centuries-old game that will come into effect on Thursday. One of them is to give umpires the power to send a player off for the rest of the match for serious misconduct. Players can be sent off for level four offenses, the most serious under the ICC’s code of conduct. Those offenses include assaulting or threatening to assault another player, an umpire, the match referee or a spectator, or any act of violence on the field of play. Any act that is “contrary to the spirit of the game” or “brings the game into disrepute” can also be labelled a level four offense. Previously, all misconduct was dealt with by umpires and the match referee after the game with fines and bans. Less serious offenses will still be dealt with in this way. The new rules also say a bowler who bowls a deliberate front-foot no ball is guilty of “unfair play” and isn’t allowed to bowl again for the rest of the in

Chelsea won’t rush Hazard back, says Conte

LONDON:  Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has the club’s long-term interests in mind with his cautious approach towards selecting Eden Hazard as they prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid. After making his first start of the season in the League Cup last week, the Belgium international was again named as a substitute for Chelsea’s 4-0 Premier League win over Stoke City on Saturday as he continues to recover from a fractured ankle. “I think now Eden is improving a lot and for sure he’s in contention for Atletico Madrid,” Conte told reporters. “After a bad injury and surgery you need time. He’s almost ready to play but if I make this decision it will be because I’m comfortable with it,” the Italian added. “I think we are managing him very well. Other players are also very important for us and now it’s important to be sure he’s ready.” Conte praised new signing Alvaro Morata for adapting well to the physical demands of the Premier League afte

The result ensured  United  equalled their best start to a Premier League campaign but left them second on 16 points from five games, behind leaders  Manchester  City on goal difference after their arch rivals thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0.Mourinho, who was sent to the stands in the last minute of stoppage time as Southampton piled on the pressure in the closing stages, was glad to come away from St Mary’s Stadium with three points after an unimpressive performance. “It is not always possible to operate at high quality but we fought hard,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “I felt some of the boys were not sharp. I didn’t feel like we could score three or four goals, like we sometimes do, so the option was to make sure we got the points. “Romelu Lukaku’s work is so impo

Atletico second as Carrasco, Griezmann strikes down Sevilla

MADRID:  Atletico Madrid warmed up for next week’s Champions League clash with Chelsea by brushing aside Sevilla 2-0 at home on Saturday thanks to second-half strikes from Yannick Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann. New Atletico striker Diego Costa, whose transfer from Chelsea was agreed this week, watched on from the stands as both sides hit the woodwork in the opening 20 minutes of an even first period. It was all Atletico, however, after the break. Carrasco raced onto former Sevilla striker Luciano Vietto’s through ball to round the onrushing goalkeeper and slot home minutes after the restart, before Griezmann then put the result beyond doubt from close range with just over 20 minutes to play. Diego Simeone’s Atletico side, who face Chelsea at home on Wednesday, leapfrog Sevilla into second place on 14 points, one behind league leaders Barcelona, who face Catalan rivals Girona in Saturday’s late kick off.

The nominations were announced in London on Friday, with Ronaldo favored to join Messi as a five-time winner. The prizes will be handed out at the London Palladium theater on Oct. 23. While Ronaldo won the Spanish league and Champions League at Real Madrid, Messi and Neymar collected only the Copa del Rey title with Barcelona. Magical Messi hits four as Barcelona thrash Eibar

MADRID:  Lionel Messi struck four goals as Barcelona romped to a 6-1 win over Eibar to extend their lead at the top of La Liga on Tuesday and maintain their 100 percent record. The Argentine was at his brilliant best as he lethally picked off the demoralised Basques, opening the scoring with a penalty in the 21st minute after Nelson Semedo was brought down by Alex Galvez. With Barca leading 3-1, Messi struck three more times to help the Catalans reach 15 points from five games, five clear of second-placed Sevilla, having played one match more. Valencia moved up to third after romping to a 5-0 win over bottom side Malaga with Simone Zaza netting a hat-trick. Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde made several changes, resting striker Luis Suarez and left back Jordi Alba while picking Gerard Deulofeu in place of the injured Ousmane Dembele. The French winger is out for nearly four months with a ruptured hamstring and Barca paid tribute to him with a t-shirt reading ‘Courage Ousman

Bairstow ton propels England to easy ODI win over Windies

LONDON:  An unbeaten century from Jonny Bairstow helped England stroll to a seven-wicket victory over West Indies in the opening match of their one-day series at Old Trafford on Tuesday. With England set a modest target of 205 in a match reduced to 42 overs per side because of a weather-delayed start, the outcome was never in doubt, and the main question was if Bairstow had time to reach three figures for the first time in ODIs having made three test centuries. The 27-year-old Bairstow got there in the 31st over when he made three runs and a few balls later Ben Stokes sealed victory by launching Ashley Nurse over the boundary rope for six. “It’s been a long time coming, I made by debut so long ago. It’s been a rollercoaster in ODIs, but hopefully it’s a stepping block for things to come,” Bairstow, who has struggled to nail down a place in England’s one-day side, said. “I opened for Yorkshire at the start of the year and it’s gone from there. I like to hope my game lend

Liverpool knocked out of League Cup by Leicester

LONDON:  Leicester City grabbed second-half goals through Shinji Okazaki and record signing Islam Slimani to earn a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the League Cup third round on Tuesday. A night of wholesale changes for the 11 Premier League sides in action produced one upset with top flight Stoke City losing 2-0 at second-tier Bristol City. Former England manager Roy Hodgson enjoyed his first victory in charge of Crystal Palace as the Premier League’s bottom club defeated Huddersfield Town 1-0 at Selhurst Park. West Ham United and Swansea City also progressed with wins over second-tier Bolton Wanderers and Reading respectively. Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was given his first start by manager Juergen Klopp following hismove from Arsenal, while Phillipe Coutinho was also in the lineup at the King Power Stadium where the visitors dominated play before the interval. Eight-times League Cup winners Liverpool failed to take their chances though and Leicester woke up i

James celebrates first Bayern start in style

BERLIN:  Colombia midfielder James Rodriguez celebrated his first Bundesliga start for Bayern Munich in style by inspiring them to a 3-0 win at Schalke 04 on Tuesday. James, on loan from Real Madrid, scored the second goal and cleverly set up the third, having also played a part in winning the penalty which got Bayern off the mark. Robert Lewandowski fired Bayern ahead from the spot in the 25th minute after James got to the byline and produced a cross which was handled by Naldo. Four minutes later, James got free in the Schalke box and tucked his shot past Ralf Faehrmann for Bayern’s second. Not content with that, he cut inside two defenders and dinked the ball over the Schalke defence for Arturo Vidal to add the third in the 75th minute. Bayern’s win put them on 12 points from five games and took them top, at least until Wednesday. Augsburg continued their impressive start when a fourth-minute goal from Michael Gregoritsch gave them a 1-0 win over last season’s run

Zidane confirms Real Madrid contract renewal

MADRID:  Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said on Tuesday that he has renewed his contract with the Spanish champions, although the deal has not yet been announced officially. Madrid have renewed various players’ contracts in recent weeks and the Frenchman told a news conference that he too has extended his deal, which was set to expire at the end of this season. “In terms of the renewal, it’s already done, but it doesn’t mean anything,” said Zidane. “I care about the day to day and I‘m not looking further than that, this is complicated.” Zidane took charge of Real in January 2016 and has led them to consecutive Champions League trophies and their first La Liga title since 2012, as well winning the UEFA Super Cup twice and the FIFA Club World Cup. Real Madrid continue their league title defence on Wednesday as they host Real Betis, although they will be without defender Theo Hernandez who injured his shoulder in Sunday’s 3-1 win at Real Sociedad. “He has been diagnos

Arsenal’s Welbeck to be out for three weeks with groin injury

LONDON:  Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck is out for at least three weeks with a groin injury and manager Arsene Wenger said on Tuesday that the striker is unlikely to return before next month’s international break. Welbeck was hurt in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw at Chelsea on Sunday and will miss Wednesday’s League Cup match against third tier side Doncaster, Premier League games with West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion, and a Europa League fixture against Bate Borisov. “Danny has a scan today, we don’t know how bad his groin injury is but he will certainly be out until the international break,” Wenger told the club’s website. The 26-year-old, who has scored three times for his club this season, is also unlikely to feature for England in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia on Oct. 5 and Lithuania on Oct. 8, though he could return in time for Arsenal’s trip to Watford on Oct. 14.
