Pujara, rain thwart rampaging Sri Lanka in Kolkata

KOLKATA:  India’s top order bulwark Cheteshwar Pujara resisted Sri Lanka’s charge with a gutsy unbeaten 47 before rain returned to wipe out more than two sessions of the second day’s play in the opening test on Friday. Steady showers had allowed just 11.5 overs on the first day of the three-match series and the heavens opened once more on Friday to initially force an early lunch and then wash out the final two sessions with India reeling on 74 for five. When play was called off, Pujara, a model of concentration, stood three runs short of a 16th test fifty, a knock he would be proud of considering the conditions at Eden Gardens. Local favourite Wriddhiman Saha survived some anxious moments to remain six not out at the other end as the visitors continued to plunder wickets between the showers in search of a first test win against their hosts in India. Sri Lanka’s first change bowler Dasun Shanaka dismissed Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin, both for four, to compound

Three Gorges, NEA, seal deal to form joint venture

Ten months after Nepal Electricity Authority and China Three Gorges International Corporation inked a joint venture agreement, the power authority and CTGIC today signed a deal to form a joint venture company to develop the 750-megawatt West Seti Hydropower Project. Though the NEA board, led by energy secretary, had endorsed the JVA allowing the authority to form a joint venture company to expedite the National Priority Project, CTGIC had taken a longer time to endorse the JVA through its board. The agreement signed today between NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising and Yao Feixiong, director of investment department of CTGIC, has paved the way for forming a joint venture company to take forward the project. The joint venture company will develop a business plan to execute the project and the project development agreement will be signed with the Investment Board Nepal. How much is a life worth, ask activists fighting slavery?

LONDON:  From $7 for a Rohingya refugee to $750 for a North Korean “slave wife”, human rights activists have voiced concerns that it is becoming increasingly easy to enslave another human being as the cost plummets. The average modern-day slave is sold for $90-100 compared to the equivalent of $40,000 some 200 years ago, said Kevin Bales, Professor of Contemporary Slavery at Britain’s University of Nottingham.“There has been a collapse in the price of slaves over the last 50 years,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s annual Trust Conference in London, which focuses on women’s empowerment and modern slavery. Pointing to a photo of boys hauling rocks in Nepal “like beasts of burden”, he said their parents would have sold them for $5-$10. Children are so cheap that if they get injured or fall in a ravine their slave master abandons them, Bales said. “They understand it’s less expensive to acquire a new child than to call a doctor,” he added. Bales attributed the fall in

Griezmann and Giroud score again as France beat Wales 2-0

PARIS:  Strike partners Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud scored as France began its World Cup warmup program with a comfortable 2-0 home win against Wales in a friendly on Friday. Both have struggled for their clubs, with Griezmann lacking goals for Atletico Madrid and Giroud hardly managing to get a game for Arsenal. But in the continued absence of Karim Benzema for France they still work very well in tandem for Les Bleus. They have been coach Didier Deschamps’ front two since last year’s European Championship and are odds-on to continue at the World Cup in Russia next year. France qualified top of its qualifying group while Wales failed to make the playoffs. France is away to Germany on Tuesday. Griezmann showed balance and athleticism to volley in the opening goal in the 18th minute — his 19th for France — and Giroud’s composure under pressure allowed him to pick his spot in the 71st for his 29th international goal. “We did what we had to do,” Deschamps sai

Two children killed as car crashes into Australian classroom

SYDNEY:  A car crashed into a Sydney school classroom on Tuesday, killing two eight-year-old boys and seriously injuring three children, Australian police said. Police believe it was an accident, not a deliberate attack. A sports utility vehicle smashed through the wooden wall of the school in Sydney’s west, where 24 primary-age children were in class with their teacher, police said in a statement. Three girls, two aged eight and another aged nine, were in a serious or stable condition in hospital. Another 17 children and their teacher were treated for minor injuries. Police said the driver, a 52-year-old woman who was not hurt, was taken to hospital for blood and urine tests and later charged with two counts of dangerous driving. TV images showed the car punched through the wall and stop completely inside the classroom, which was adorned with children’s drawings and pictures. “Obviously it was a scene of carnage,” New South Wales state Ambulance Superintendent Step

Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. ZURICH:  Troubled AC Milan were held to a goalless draw by AEK Athens for the second time in a fortnight in the Europa League on Thursday and Everton were dumped out by Olympique Lyonnais after a 3-0 defeat in France. Arsenal qualified despite dropping their first points in Group H as they were held 0-0 at home by Red Star Belgrade while Lazio, Dynamo Kiev and FCSB, formerly Steaua Bucharest, joined them in the round of 32. There was an extraordinary start at Vitoria Guimaraes where visitors Olympique Marseille had substitute Patrice Evra sent off before kick-off after players became involved in a brawl with fans of their own team. An Olympique player identified by the media as Evra was seen aiming a karate-style kick at supporters who had invaded the area behind the goal. Vitoria completed Olympique’s misery by winning 1-0 with a late goal and the French side had Boubacar Kamara sent off for a second yellow card offence. Olympique Lyon scored three times in the last
